Memories are thought to be encoded in the brain as enduring physical and chemical changes, or engrams. Although recent technological advances have enabled substantial progress in our understanding of memory engrams in rodents, many questions remain unexplored. The editors at Communications Biology, Nature Communications and Scientific Reports invite original research Articles offering new insights into the neural mechanisms underlying the formation and transformation of engrams during the various stages of a memory lifetime, such as encoding, consolidation, retrieval and forgetting.

This call for papers includes but is not limited to studies presenting novel engram mechanisms at the level of brain circuits, cell ensembles, synapses, and/or nuclei, across multiple brain regions and memory tasks. We also encourage submissions that showcase novel innovative tools to probe the biology of memory engrams.
