Plastic degradation/recycling

Plastic degradation refers to the process of breaking down plastic materials into simpler or smaller components to reduce their environmental impact. Methods to decompose plastic material include mechanical breakdown, chemical recycling, and biodegradation. Mechanical degradation and chemical recycling aim to produce smaller particles and simpler chemical structures that can be reused to produce new material. Alternatively, biodegradation of plastics by enzymes produced by microorganisms ideally results in the metabolization of the materials; research efforts to advance this field aim to increase the effectiveness of these enzymes.

This Collection aims to attract original research that develops or employs methods to break down and recycle plastic materials by mechanical, chemical, or biological means.

To submit your manuscript for consideration at Scientific Reports as part of this Collection, please follow the steps detailed on this page. On the first page of our online submission system, under “I’m submitting:” select the option “any other article type”. Once logged in you can submit your manuscript to a Collection by selecting “Guest Edited Collection”, under the “Choose the appropriate manuscript type” message, and clicking “Continue”. Then when filling out the manuscript information, select the "Plastic degradation/recycling" Collection from the alphabetical list on the “Springer Nature Subject Category” tab. Authors should express their interest in the Collection in their cover letter.

Accepted papers are published on a rolling basis as soon as they are ready.

In addition to papers on Plastic degradation/recycling, Scientific Reports welcomes all original research in the field of Medical Research. To browse our latest articles in Biochemistry Research click here.
