Marine island biodiversity and conservation

Marine islands and their surrounding waters are hotspots of biodiversity, home to an incredible number of endemic species due to their particular biogeographic and evolutionary histories. Indigenous human societies have also prospered on these islands and formed tight cultural bonds with the unique ecosystems. Yet, islands have historically been, and are predicted to be, some of the regions most affected by anthropogenic pressures and resulting reduction in biodiversity. Impacts from invasive species, habitat change, and over-exploitation can be swift and devastating, and are exacerbated by climate change.

This Collection invites submissions of the latest research with a focus on the evolutionary and biogeographic history, ecology, and conservation of biodiversity in marine islands and surrounding waters.
