Sustainable fishing

As vital sources of food, economic security, and cultural identity, fisheries are deeply connected to the livelihood of millions of people worldwide. Yet, increased demand, technological advancements, and poor management, have led to fishing practices that can have devastating and lasting impacts to aquatic ecosystems. To safeguard both fisheries and broader biodiversity, continuous efforts from scientists, policymakers and the public alike are needed to ensure the long-term sustainability of fishing activities.

This Collection offers a platform for the latest original research on sustainable fishing. It invites submissions in the fields of ecology, conservation, environmental sciences, sustainability, and interdisciplinary research, including studies that involve (but are not limited to) a social science or economic analysis component. We believe that contributions from different backgrounds and regions will lead to more comprehensive solutions for the challenges faced by fisheries worldwide; we therefore particularly encourage submissions from researchers in the Global South.

Cesar Bordehore is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Ecology and a researcher at the Ramon Margalef Research Institute, both at the University of Alicante, Spain. With a background in marine biology, population ecology, and modelling, his primary research focuses on marine ecology and conservation. He employs modelling techniques to address various conservation challenges, optimise fisheries stock enhancement and profits, and recently, to study the dynamics of COVID-19. He coordinates the Marine Laboratory of the University of Alicante (https://web.ua.es/marlabdenia/), leading a multidisciplinary team of biologists, ecologists, and mathematicians. Dr. Bordehore has been an Editorial Board member for Scientific Reports since 2022.

Patrice Brehmer is a Fisheries Ecologist with a history of leading or organizing comprehensive sea survey expeditions across the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, and Antarctic Oceans. Holding a PhD in Fisheries and Fisheries Acoustics, his current research centers on the exploration of marine ecosystem stressors and socioecosystems. Employing a transdisciplinary and intersectoral approach, his work aims to elevate management and governance practices to ensure the sustainability of marine socio-ecosystems in West Africa. Dr. Brehmer has been an Editorial Board member for Scientific Reports since 2022.

Francesco Tiralongo is an Ichthyologist in the Department of Biology at the University of Catania. He is primarily interested in the study of coastal fish communities, with a focus on cryptobenthic and benthic fish. He is also engaged in the study and monitoring of rare and non-indigenous fish species in Italian waters, as well as the investigation of biological invasions in the Mediterranean Sea. Another area of his research is fisheries science. Furthermore, he is engaged in studying the biological and ecological aspects of elasmobranchs. Dr. Tiralongo has been a member of the Editorial Board for Scientific Reports since 2022.
