For decades, silicon technologies have been the centre of academic and industrial research; nowadays silicon device processing is well established and offers a number of advantages - with respect to other semiconductor technologies - such as being lower-cost, higher-yield and very robust. Silicon photonics studies the generation, modulation, processing, and detection of light in silicon, aiming to exploit its maturity in photonics as well as optoelectronics. Such manipulation of light in silicon is paramount to achieve fully integrated photonic circuit where sources, waveguides, and sensors are all combined in a single chip.

This Collection bring together original research articles in the topic of silicon photonics, looking at latest technology developments as well as their use in timely applications in natural science.

Editors

Chi-Wai Chow is a Professor at the Department of Photonics, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, Taiwan. His research interests include silicon photonics, optical wireless communication, fiber-wireless network. Prof Chow has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2023.

 

 

Yung-Jr Hung is a Distinguished Professor at Department of Photonics, National Sun Yat-sen University. His recent research interests include silicon photonics, CMOS photovoltaics, photonic gyroscope, semiconductor lasers and guided mode resonance filter. Prof Hung has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2023.

 

 

Bhavin J. Shastri is an Assistant Professor of Engineering Physics at Queen’s University. His research interests include photonic computing at the intersection of silicon photonics, neuromorphic computing, and quantum neural networks. Dr Shastri has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2022.
