Wastewater poses significant risks to human health due to its potential for transmitting waterborne diseases, containing chemical contaminants, and causing pollution in ecosystems. When people are exposed to contaminated water, pathogens like bacteria and viruses, or chemical pollutants, including heavy metals and pharmaceuticals, can have long-term health effects. Emerging contaminants like microplastics are being studied for their potential health impacts. In addition, pollution from wastewater can trigger harmful algal blooms and affect aquatic life, impacting those who consume contaminated seafood. Vulnerable populations with limited access to clean water and sanitation are disproportionately affected by improper wastewater disposal.
This Collection seeks original research from all areas investigating the direct and indirect effects of wastewater pollution on human health, as well as strategies to mitigate contaminant exposure.
