Change in the Amazon

Submission status
Open

Amazonia is currently undergoing rapid and concerning changes that threaten its ecological balance and its crucial role in mitigating global climate change. Deforestation and wildfires have resulted in the destruction of habitats and increased the vulnerability of ecosystems to climate change and extreme weather events. Illegal and unmonitored practices of mining, logging, and wildlife trafficking have further compounded these issues, causing irreparable damage, and exacerbating social and environmental conflicts.

In this Collection, we present a selection of papers that delve into both natural and human-induced disturbances in Amazonia and aim to address the environmental challenges facing this vital ecosystem through a multidisciplinary approach.

Rodolfo Nobrega, PhD
University of Bristol, UK

Rodolfo Nobrega is a Lecturer in the School of Geographical Sciences at the University of Bristol, UK. He is an Ecohydrologist interested in understanding the role of water in ecosystems and its synergy with other terrestrial biosphere and anthroposphere components. He uses plot, community, and catchment scales to identify and assess ecosystem processes on regional and global levels to support theories that reduce equifinality in hydrology and Earth System science models. Dr Nobrega is an Editorial Board Member for Communications Earth & Environment.

Gerbrand Koren, PhD
Utrecht University, The Netherlands

Gerbrand Koren is an Assistant Professor at the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development, Utrecht University. His research focuses on the water and carbon exchange in terrestrial ecosystems. In particular, he is interested in the sensitivity of the Amazon forest to changing climatic conditions. For this, he integrates local measurements, remote sensing and modelling approaches. Dr Koren has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2023.

José Alexandre Felizola Diniz-Filho, PhD
Federal University of Goiás, Brazil

José Alexandre Felizola Diniz-Filho is a Professor in the Department of Ecology, at the Federal University of Goiás, Brasil, and 1A researcher at the Brazilian National Council for Research and Development (CNPq), working in the application of statistical and computational methods in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, mainly on how geographically and phylogenetically structured data can help disentangling ecological and evolutionary mechanisms underlying macroecological patterns and, at the same time, provide solutions to mitigate current biodiversity crisis. Dr Diniz-Filho is an Associate Editor for npj Biodiversity.

Ning Lin, PhD
Princeton University, USA

Ning Lin is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Princeton University, USA. Her research areas include Natural Hazards and Risk Analysis, Wind Engineering, Coastal Engineering, and Climate Change Impact and Adaptation. Her current primary focus is tropical cyclone hazards and risk analysis. She integrates science, engineering, and policy to study tropical cyclone-related weather extremes (strong winds, heavy rainfall, storm surges, and compounding sea level rise and heatwaves), how they change with changing climate, and how their impact on society can be better mitigated. Professor Lin is the Editor-in-Chief for npj Natural Hazards.
