Kitaev Materials

The spin-1/2 bond-dependent Ising model on a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice, known as the Kitaev model, has recently attracted great attention. A microscopic approach to achieve such interaction has been discovered, leading to the proposal of several candidate materials.

Simultaneously, experimental investigations have focused on identifying signatures of the Kitaev spin liquid, such as the half-quantized thermal Hall conductivity. Despite significant progress made in recent decades, Kitaev spin liquid in the proposed materials yet to be fully confirmed, and the search for the experimental realization of this exotic quantum spin liquid continues. This collection aims to explore and advance our understanding of frustrated magnetic models and materials, expanding the search for Kitaev materials and unveiling new states of matter within them.

The topics will include, but are not limited to:

  1. Theoretical models and predictions of Kitaev materials
  2. Experimental demonstration of phenomena in Kitaev materials
  3. Theoretical designing of Kitaev materials
  4. New materials, synthesis and crystal growth of Kitaev materials
  5. New phases of matter in Kitaev materials
  6. Numerical advancements in extended Kitaev models

The Collection will publish original research papers, and articles in various formats (full details on content types can be found here). Papers will be published in npj Quantum Materials as soon as they are accepted and then collected together and promoted on the Collection homepage. All Collections are associated with a call for papers and are managed by one or more journal editors and/or Guest Editors.

This Collection welcomes submissions from all authors – and not by invitation only – on the condition that the manuscripts fall within the scope of the Collection and of npj Quantum Materials more generally. All submissions are subject to the same peer review process and editorial standards as regular npj Quantum Materials articles, including the journal’s policy on competing interests. The Editors declare no competing interests with the submissions which they have handled through the peer review process. The peer review of any submissions for which the Editors have competing interests is handled by another Editor who has no competing interests. For more information, refer to our Collections guidelines.
