Freshwater ecology

Freshwater ecology is the study of the interrelationships between organisms and their physical environmental in freshwater ecosystems. Researchers in this area seek to understand the ecosystem services that various freshwater environments provide, along with the processes and interactions occurring with adjacent terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Freshwater ecosystems are precious resources for the well-being of our planet but are under constant threat from human pressures. Recent decades have seen extraordinary successes in conservation and restoration of freshwater ecosystems, but increased knowledge and continuous efforts are needed if we are to truly preserve such unique habitats.

This Collection welcomes submissions from all fields of ecology, conservation and restoration, environmental sciences, sustainability, and interdisciplinary research, with a focus on freshwater ecosystems and the organisms found within them.

Gilad Bino is a Senior Lecturer at the Centre for Ecosystem Science, University of New South Wales. With a passion for conservation and scientific inquiry, he is dedicated to addressing the ongoing biodiversity crisis and finding sustainable solutions for the future. His research focuses on understanding the underlying processes that shape and threaten biodiversity, with the goal of promoting ecological resilience and protecting vulnerable species. He is involved in teaching, research, and advocacy for the protection of our planet's natural resources. Dr Bino has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2016.

Baoshan Cui is a Professor in Environmental Science at the School of Environment, Beijing Normal University (BNU). His research interests include wetland restoration, wetland ecohydrology and wetland ecosystem health assessment. Prof Cui has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2021.

Thomas Hein is a Professor in the Institute of Hydrobiology and Aquatic Ecosystem Management at University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna. His research focuses on river and wetland ecology including nutrient and organic matter dynamics and biodiversity organized in meta-ecosystems. Further, scientific activities consider riverine landscapes as socio-ecohydrological systems and address responses to management interventions at different spatial and temporal scales. Prof Hein has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2022.
