Metamaterials

Metamaterials are artificial materials which have widely attracted research attention due to their ability of delivering unique features, and are expected to be critical in the field of photonics as well as mechanics. By artificially creating subwavelength patterned structures, optical metamaterials allow to control and manipulate light; potential applications in which these types of structure can be paramount are metalenses and cloaking devices. By engineering micron to submicron structures, mechanical metamaterials instead exhibit exceptional responses to applied forces; these can be essential for example to create solids that have behave like liquids and ultralight, low-density materials with extraordinary strength.

This Collection showcases original manuscripts reporting the latest advances in metamaterials, looking at optical as well as mechanical metamaterials. It spans from metamaterial growth and characterisation technologies to their use in exciting applications from energy harvesting to medical imaging.

Submitting a paper for consideration

To submit your manuscript for consideration at Scientific Reports as part of this Collection, please follow the steps detailed on this page. On the first page of our online submission system, under “I’m submitting:” select the option “any other article type”. Once logged in you can submit your manuscript to a Collection by selecting “Guest Edited Collection”, under the “Choose the appropriate manuscript type” message, and clicking “Continue”. Then when filling out the manuscript information, select the "Metamaterials" Collection from the alphabetical list on the “Springer Nature Subject Category” tab. Authors should express their interest in the Collection in their cover letter.

Accepted papers are published on a rolling basis as soon as they are ready.

In addition to papers on Metamaterials, Scientific Reports welcomes all original research in the field of Physical sciences. To browse our latest articles in Physical sciences, click here.
