Substance use disorders (SUDs) refer to mental disorders, whereby affected individuals are unable to control their use of substances, such as nicotine, alcohol, drugs, or specific medications. SUD symptoms can be physiological, behavioural, or cognitive in nature, and can range from moderate to severe, with addiction being manifested as psychological and physical dependence on the use of those substances. SUDs and related addictions are a major public health concern, affecting people’s health and well-being at all ages.
This Collection welcomes original research articles on SUDs and related addictions. Studies investigating the genetic, neurobiological, psychological, and environmental risk factors for the development of these disorders and approaches to their diagnosis and treatment are welcome.
