Integrated photonics is a branch of study that examines the ability of integrated devices such as waveguides, lasers, detectors, etc on a single chip to achieve faster and more efficient transmission and processing of information. Although photonic circuits operate in a way that appears to be similar to that of electrons in electronic circuits, they rely on photons which travel at the speed of light, and consequently, they don’t have the same thermal problems. Photonic circuits also allow quantum phenomena to be exploited in processing. Such advantages can be paramount in a variety of applications including quantum computing and communications.

This Collection seeks to showcase the latest advances in integrated photonics, looking at the next generation of integrated photonic systems as well as the applications of their components.

Submitting a paper for consideration

To submit your manuscript for consideration at Scientific Reports as part of this Collection, please follow the steps detailed on this page. On the first page of our online submission system, under “I’m submitting:” select the option “any other article type”. Once logged in you can submit your manuscript to a Collection by selecting “Guest Edited Collection”, under the “Choose the appropriate manuscript type” message, and clicking “Continue”. Then when filling out the manuscript information, select the "Integrated Photonics" Collection from the alphabetical list on the “Springer Nature Subject Category” tab. Authors should express their interest in the Collection in their cover letter.

Accepted papers are published on a rolling basis as soon as they are ready.

In addition to papers on Integrated Photonics, Scientific Reports welcomes all original research in the field of Optics and photonics. To browse our latest articles in Optics and photonics, click here.
