Five Years of Communications Physics

To celebrate the fifth anniversary of the journal, we share with our readers a special collection of articles selected by our editorial team and our editorial board members. We have also selected our most cited papers and those that have been most downloaded or highly discussed in social media platforms.

As a way of looking at physics from a different perspective, our readers are also invited to vote in our image competition.

5 years of Communications Physics

Editorial Board and Editors favourites

Editorial decisions at Communications Physics rely on the intense collaboration between in-house editors and Editorial Board Members (EBMs). The expertise of EBMs in specialised subfields and their integral participation  in those communities  is the editorial pulley which allows to carry the weight of making thoughtful and informed decisions on a daily basis. Our collaborative model is celebrated even within this anniversary collection, where our readers can finds a selection of favourite papers by some of our EBMs and our in-house editors.

Most Cited

The two most cited papers for each of the fives years of the journal are showcased in this section.

We count two reviews and eight research articles. This composition of the most cited papers encourages us as a journal to pursue our aim: updating specialists on the novelties in their respective research areas (articles) and providing a comprehensive guide for scientists approaching a topic  for the first time (reviews).

We congratulate all the authors of the selected papers for this impressive result!

Most Visible

While citations are indeed an important metric for academia, they strongly depend on the size of each specific research areas and communities. As such, they are not always the best indicator of the variety of topics published by a journal and the interest raised in them beyond the specialist community. As a better representation of the general interest raised by our articles, we have selected  some of the most downloaded papers in the journal's life, in combination to papers that have received a the highest altmetric scores. High altmetric scores are a metric of how much an article has been shared in the press, social media and other media channels. In fact, for two of the papers in this section (A state variable for crumpled thin sheets, Downbeat delays are a key component of swing in jazz) our colleagues at the Springer Nature press team have been instrumental in raising their visibility by releasing a press communication when they were published, demonstrating that "physics" can also resonate with the general public. We commend the authors of the selected papers for the originality of the work and the broad interest raised in the ever-growing physics community and beyond!

Feature Image Contest

Feature Image Contest:

All authors of accepted papers are encouraged to submit a feature image to be used for the promotion of their article in social media and other media platforms. As a result, we have collected a large number of images over these past five years. As a proof for the most skeptical that physics can also be aesthetic, we launched our first edition of Feature image contest in February 2023. With this contest, we want to provide a bit of fun for our readers while acknowledging the creativity of our authors.

Our editors shortlisted the feature images from among the many submitted by the authors and our readers voted which was worthy to earn the coveted title of best physics image.

Congratulations to the contest winner and thank you to all who participated and voted!
