Maternal health and mortality

Maternal health, or health during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period, greatly affects the long-term outcomes of both mother and child. However, many pregnant individuals have barriers to healthcare, and pregnant individuals are usually not included in clinical trials, which can make both seeking and providing maternal healthcare difficult. Additionally, despite improvements in maternal mortality over the past 20 years, pregnant individuals remain at an increased risk of death during pregnancy, childbirth, and the early postpartum period. There are many factors and complications that can affect a pregnant person’s health and well-being, and there are well-documented inequities in the healthcare system that can affect pregnant people to a greater extent.

In recognition of the role this research plays in supporting United Nations Sustainability and Development Goals, this Collection welcomes original research into maternal health and mortality, including support and care during pregnancy, the health of pregnant individuals, improved birth conditions, postpartum care for pregnant individuals, and improving women’s healthcare in lower-middle income countries.
