Themed issues

BDJ Team began publishing themed issues in autumn 2020 and now publishes two every year.

2023
Dental nurses 2023
Our first themed issue of 2023 focused on dental nurses. Contributors included BADN, SBDN, Peninsula Dental School and Dr Debbie Reed. We also published part 2 of our focus on sustainable dentistry and offered an hour of CPD on dental management of patients irradiated for head and neck cancer.

Continuing education
Our second themed issue of 2023 focused on continuing education, with a deep dive into registration, CPD and training, and a selection of fascinating career stories. We also published part 5 in our neurodiversity and dentistry series that included personal stories of neurodiversity strengths from dental colleagues.

2022

Dental hygienists and therapists
The first themed issue of 2022, published in October, focused on all things dental hygiene and therapy with a foreword from the President of the British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy (BSDHT).

Mental health & wellbeing
In our second themed issue we focused on mental health and wellbeing for dental professionals, including how to use the Mental Health Wellness Framework; stress management; practical tips for wellbeing; developing a growth mindset for the dental team; and managing mental health crises in dental practice.

2021

DCP research issue
In September 2021 we published a wide range of research from DCPs and DCP students; the dental therapist’s role in a ‘shared care’ approach; and an interview with a dental nurse who is now a DCP Teaching Fellow and DN Research Practitioner.

The dental nurse issue
Our first dental nurse themed issue introduced a wide range of dental nurses making the most of their careers – or hobbies – delved into the history of dental nursing and looked at the challenges facing the profession.

2020

Infection control
BDJ Team’s first themed issue focused on infection control: all things COVID-19 and returning to work with appropriate PPE; the history of infection control; dealing with patient complaints in the ‘new normal’; motivating patients to look after their oral health; and CPD on the infected oral healthcare worker.

Higher education for DCPs
Our second themed issue presented case studies of student dental hygienists, therapists and dentists, their career backgrounds and plans for the future. It also looked at how universities and students were adapting to life during the COVID-19 pandemic.
