Abstract
As Dental Infection Control Advisor and coming from a dental nursing background, I read the letter Back splatter with your bagel? (Vital summer 07 page 5) with interest.
Main
At the beginning of my career as a dental nurse, I too was guilty of wearing my uniform to and from work. However, this was due to a lack of awareness. Ten years ago there was limited infection control advice and guidelines, which are now readily available.
However, it is also prudent to look at other issues surrounding wearing uniforms outside of work. The employing dentist needs to encourage DCPs to remove protective clothing and they need to ensure that DCPs are allocated the time and privacy to do so at the beginning and end of the working day as well as before and after the lunch break.
I now endeavour to educate the whole dental team during dental practice visits whilst auditing and providing training. I look forward to seeing many more dental nurses actively working to improve infection control in regards to this matter amongst others.
