Throughout history, humans have been captivated by psychoactive substances, and have taken them for pleasure, guidance, or (most often) medical purposes. Today, certain recreational drugs, such as ketamine, amphetamines, opioids and benzodiazepines, have legitimate roles in medical systems, making appearances not only at music festivals but also in hospitals.

Over the past 10 years, a specific class of drugs — psychedelics — has gained renewed and extensive attention as a potential medical treatment, in particular for mental health disorders such as affective or anxiety disorders and for tobacco and alcohol addiction. The research regarding the clinical potential of psychedelics unifies my clinical pursuits (addiction care and psychotherapy) and resonates with my research interests, particularly the exploration of lasting drug effects and clinical placebo effects.
