NSMB’s 30th anniversary: shining a light on the invisible

The beauty of structural and molecular biology is to allow us to understand nature in its details. It is in those seemingly invisible details that a wealth of mechanistic and biological insight can be gleaned. I am happy to join the celebration of 30 years of Nature Structural & Molecular Biology (NSMB) featuring many of these scientific findings.

In this interpretation, the crystal vase represents the molecules in the study, and the paper covered in photosensitive solution as the detector. The sunlight that travels through the vase, registering its perturbations on the photographic layer, represents the diverse means used to inspect the nanoscale world: not just photons, but also electrons, neutrons, sound and so on.
