Clonal evolution of stem cells unveiled by modeling DNA methylation fluctuation.

Clonal renewal of adult stem cells occurs in many tissues at a high turnover rate, which often obscures lineage analysis using DNA markers. “We were frustrated with the low resolution of these methods,” says Darryl Shibata at University of Southern California. To look for a faster molecular clock, Shibata, Alexander Anderson at Moffitt Cancer Center, Trevor Graham at Queen Mary University of London and their colleagues chose to listen to the ticks of methylation fluctuation in an interesting group of CpG sites in the genome.
