Social media has transformed the way we communicate science. Here is a step-by-step guide to promote the science of your own study or of others as a thread on Twitter.

The general guiding principles are to keep the thread concise (if possible, keep it under ten posts), get to the point of the study in the first post, use graphics and links to other supporting evidence, and keep the language as accessible as possible. One mistake immunologists often make is to focus too much on surface markers and leukocyte subsets. Unless your intended audience is the specialists within your subfield, this is a sure way to lose the general audience. If you must use many surface markers, cytokines, or other nomenclature, define them upfront, preferably with some graphics to guide your audience.
