Skin α-synuclein differentiates synucleinopathies

Overlap of the clinical features of multiple system atrophy (MSA) and Parkinson disease (PD), both of which are caused by abnormal accumulation of α-synuclein, can hinder diagnosis. Researchers tested whether α-synuclein in the skin could distinguish between these two disorders. They collected skin biopsies from three locations in 31 participants with MSA and 54 participants with PD. Cutaneous deposition of phosphorylated α-synuclein was greater and more widespread in participants with MSA, suggesting that this approach could aid diagnosis.
