Gut microbiome changes linked to Parkinson disease

Evidence is accumulating that imbalances in gut microbiome composition are associated with diseases, including neurological disorders such as Parkinson disease (PD). In a new study reported in Nature Communications, Haydeh Payami and colleagues used a metagenomic approach to survey the entire gut microbiome in people with PD, and they identified specific changes that could be linked to the pathogenesis of the disease.

“Idiopathic PD is thought to be the product of gene–environment interactions, and we have found over 90 genetic susceptibility loci and several environmental risk factors,” explains Payami. “However, we have not yet found a single causative combination, which is why I ventured into gut microbiome research.”
