Multidimensional MRI detects astrogliosis

New research shows that multidimensional MRI can map astrogliosis in human brain tissue. Astrogliosis is a common response to brain disease or injury and is characterized by proliferation of reactive astrocytes. Benjamini et al. used a combination of relaxation and diffusion MRI techniques to image post-mortem cortical tissue specimens from individuals with blast-induced traumatic brain injuries. A comparison of imaging and histopathological data revealed a distinct MRI signature that correlated with the density of staining for GFAP, a protein that is upregulated in reactive astrocytes. The findings raise the possibility that astrogliosis could be visualized in the living brain.
