Editorial Comment on: Multicentre investigation on the influence of climate in penile prosthesis infection

This editorial comment refers to a study by Gross et al., which aims to examine the influence of climate on penile prosthesis infection [1].

Penile prosthesis is associated with an infection rate of 1–3% [2]. This is significantly lower than the estimated infection rate associated with revision, which has been shown to be between 10 and 18% [3]. Moreover, it has been suggested that diabetes [4] and spinal cord injury [5, 6] are associated with an increased risk for post-operative penile prosthesis infections. It has also been reported that prolonged operative time is associated with an increased likelihood of an implant becoming infected [5].
