Management of treatment-resistant ocular hypertension post EyeCee one IOL implantation: an observational study

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) issued a patient safety alert after cases of increased intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients recently implanted with the EyeCee One and EyeCee One Crystal preloaded intraocular lens (IOL) [1]. As a precaution, healthcare providers have been advised to review everyone who received these IOLs since October 2022, with initial reports suggesting a 2–4% incidence of increased IOP in this patient group [2]. Retrospective analysis has identified glaucoma and ocular hypertension as significant risks factor for increased IOP [3]. Initial reports suggest intraocular pressure is mostly treatable with medical therapy [2]. However, there are no reports on the management of treatment-resistant ocular hypertension. This observational study analysed the outcomes of patients who required additional procedures following EyeCee One lens implantation.

This is a retrospective cohort study of the EyeCee One pre-loaded hydrophobic IOL (manufactured by NIDEK Co., Limited in Japan and distributed by Bausch & Lomb UK Limited) implanted at University Hospital Hairmyres, NHS Lanarkshire, Scotland, United Kingdom, from September 2022 to January 2023. Consecutive patients with uncomplicated phacoemulsification and IOL implantation using EyeCee one lens placed ‘in the bag’ were identified from review of surgical records. Data collection included age, gender, pre- and post-operative best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and IOP, and management of raised IOP up to 6-months. In our study, the categorization of interventions into ‘Early’ and ‘Late’ was based on the median time to intervention across all subjects. This approach was chosen to create a balanced division of the dataset, ensuring that the number of subjects in each category was approximately equal. Statistical analysis was performed on Microsoft excel v16.83.
