Comment on: ‘Effect of trabeculectomy on the rate of progression of visual field damage’

We read with great interest Koenig et al.’s paper, who evaluated the effect of trabeculectomy on the Rate of Progression (RoP) of visual field (VF) damage [1]. They conclude that trabeculectomy leads to a significant reduction in the RoP of VF loss post-operatively. We agree that evaluation of the RoP adds significant value to surrogate outcomes such as intraocular pressure.

Cataract and glaucoma frequently co-exist as diseases of older age, however trabeculectomy is considered a specific risk factor for cataract formation. Up to 50% of phakic patients develop visually significant cataract 5 years after trabeculectomy [2].
