This paper contributes to the growing literature supporting the use of virtual reality (VR) in delivering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training and identifies its potential use with dental students. At a time where technological advancements, including VR, are growing exponentially, it is topical to consider whether these latest technologies can be used to support clinical education.

With less than one in ten surviving a sudden cardiac arrest when out of hospital,1 CPR training is crucial to saving lives. It is estimated that around 60,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur each year in the UK2 and, although relatively rare in dental practice, it is expected that all dentists are trained and competent in managing medical emergencies. Early CPR can significantly increase the chances of survival, doubling the survival rate for some.3,4 For this reason, the importance of good life support teaching cannot be understated.
