Since the Was Not Brought (WNB) pathway was introduced and resources made available for practices to support Children and Young people there has been a lack of resources for practices to implement a similar protocol for adults at risk. These had originally been planned to be released late in 2022 but the COVID pandemic caused significant delays to this and other publications. These resources are now in the process of being finalised for publication and it is therefore the perfect time for you to review your safeguarding documentation and training so that the new documents can slot straight into your practice.
Why is the WNB pathway for adults at risk important? Safeguarding means protecting an adult's right to live in safety, free from abuse and neglect. It is about people and organisations working together to prevent and stop risks and experience of abuse or neglect while making sure the adult's wellbeing is promoted. The requirements on healthcare professionals including dentists and DCPs have been developed over time as there have unfortunately been instances where adults haven't been cared for as well as they should be. Following these regulations and implementing systems like WNB in your practice will help position you to offer the best service and care to your patients.
