When taking on a new member of the dental team there is always a laundry list of items that need to be checked before they can start working in your practice. One of the items we often receive questions about are DBS checks. As members of the dental team often work with children or vulnerable adults, as a practice, you need to make sure that it is suitable for any potential recruits to be working in your practice. Sometimes it is a straightforward process, nothing comes back on the DBS check, and you continue with your recruitment process, sometimes you see something expected and sometimes you get more than you bargained for.
For each member of the team joining the practice you need to first assess how they will be working and therefore what sort of DBS check would be required. For clinical staff as they will be undertaking a regulated activity, they likely all need an Enhanced DBS check, usually with a check on the barred list for children and vulnerable adults where they will be working with them. For non-clinical staff you will likely only be undertaking a Standard check and finally for staff who do not work with patients, cleaners for example, you would undertake a basic check. Once you have established what sort of check is required, you then speak with the candidate and get their consent to obtain a DBS check.
