Cardiac diastolic function and heart rate recovery in obese adolescents: chronotropic response and statistical perspectives

We read with great interest the recent article entitled “Cardiac function in adolescents with obesity: Cardiometabolic risk factors and impact on physical fitness” by Franssen et al. [1] in your distinguished journal. Authors examined cardiac structure and function in obese adolescents, and they assessed associations between altered cardiac function/structure and cardiometabolic disease risk factors or cardiopulmonary exercise capacity. They found that altered cardiac diastolic function was independently related to hyperinsulinemia and whole-body insulin resistance, and only revealed by a delayed heart rate recovery (HRR) during CPET in obese adolescents. They stated that whole-body insulin resistance, and delayed HRR could be regarded as clinically relevant outcome parameters.
