NH is an iron storage disorder of unknown etiology with antenatal or early postnatal onset which usually leads to liver failure in infancy. NH is usually considered an autosomal recessive disorder but recurrence of NH in half siblings born to an unaffected mother has recently been described in two families(1). We report a further family in whom there was a recurrence of NH in two female half siblings born following artificial insemination by two different donors. Etiologic investigations were negative in the infants and the unaffected mother. Both infants died from liver failure, despite iron chelation and antioxidant therapy. This report adds to the evidence against autosomal recessive inheritance at least for a subset of NH and indicates that artificial insemination by donor may not prevent recurrence of NH in affected families.
