Purpose: Most centers follow the policy of delaying discharge of circumcised male newborns (CMN) untill they void. We hypothesize that majority of babies, will ultimately void without intervention.

Methods: We reviewed the charts of CMN during the newborn period at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center from January, 1993 through end of 1995. We gathered data on the following variables: Gestational age (GA), Race (R), Birth Weight (BW), Method of feeding (F), Anesthesia (Ane) and Device used. Data was analysed on microsoft exel using 2-tailed, student t-test.

Result: There were 8246 deliveries at Mercy Hospital during the study period out of 3186 males, 1856 were circumcised. Data was analysed for 1574 CMN. Mean time of void post circumcision (TOC-TOV) for all CMN = 5.016 (S D= 3.43 hours). CMN who voided significantly early were premature, Low Birth Weight (LBW), non-breast milk and those who were circumcised with Gomco. Hispanics voided significantly later than other races. 49% of hispanic CMN were breast fed versus 28% of all CMN. Mild bleeding was the only complication, incidence 10.1% of all CMN.

Conclusion: All CMN eventually voided without requiring any intervention. Therefore this study agrees with the previous recommendation of not delaying discharge of CMN for voiding. Table
