Abstract
The surface characteristics of A-B-A type tri-block copolymer membranes consisting of α-helical poly(ε-N-benzyloxycarbonyl-L-lysine) as the A component and polybutadiene as the B component were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), replication electron micrograph, and wettability measurement. The XPS measurements showed the copolymer composition of the outermost surface to be quite different from the bulk composition. It was found by replication electron micrograph that the block copolymer surface is not even, i.e., the polybutadiene domains are elevated above the polypeptide matrix. The results of contact angle measurements indicated the existence of an interfacial region between the α-helical A component and the B component at the surfaces of the block copolymer membranes.
