Methylation panel predicts RCC outcome

A four-gene methylation marker panel can be used to predict survival of patients with clear cell renal cell cancer (ccRCC), according to a recently published study.

The clear-cell subtype is the most common form of renal cancer and, despite receiving treatment, ∼30% of patients with ccRCC relapse. The best predictors currently in use for predicting treatment outcome and potential relapse are pathological stage and grade and tumour size, which do not take into account the features of the particular patient and do not accurately represent tumour biology. The addition of molecular epigenetic markers, such as methylation status, to such parameters could improve the accuracy of predictive markers, as promoter-methylation-induced gene silencing is a mechanism of ccRCC development.
