The authors trimmed the whiskers of mice bilaterally for 10 days, starting at postnatal day 15 (P15). The resulting reduction in sensory input led to a decrease in neural activity in the barrel cortex, as expected, but had no effect on vascular density in this area. A moderate increase in whisker stimulation and sensory input, which was achieved by placing neonatal mice in an enriched environment, also had no effect on vascular density. Together, these data suggest that angiogenesis does not require neural activity.
