The complement regulatory protein CRRY is an important regulator of the 'alternative pathway' in rodents and is expressed at high levels in microglia. To test whether this protein is involved in microglial priming, the authors generated Crry-knockout mice, causing these mice to exhibit chronic complement activation. The mice were healthy, but histological analysis revealed elevated levels of primed microglia in the brain and spinal cord of Crry−/− mice compared with wild-type controls.

by triggering the primed microglial state, uncontrolled complement activation might be involved in accelerating the progression of neurodegenerative  disease
