EGL picks up its cargo

Confirming what had previously been shown in mammalian cells, the authors show that the carboxy-terminal domain (CTD) of BICD can inhibit the minus-end-directed transport of mRNA cargo in fly embryos. The CTD of BICD is proposed to hold the protein in an inactive conformation in the absence of cargo, by binding to the amino-terminal region. Presumably, the association of an unknown cargo-binding protein with the CTD releases this autoinhibition of BICD, thereby stimulating mRNA transport.
