It was previously noted that the Lys56 residue of histone H3 (H3K56) is transiently acetylated during S phase, and that cells with reduced H3K56 acetylation are hypersensitive to certain DNA-damaging agents. Two studies now report the identification of a new histone acetyltransferase (HAT) in Saccharomyces cerevisiae that acetylates H3K56 and thereby protects the genome against DNA damage during replication.
