Dr. Mohammed ibn Ibrahim Al-Suwaiyel first became involved in science when he joined the King Fahad University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) to study systems engineering in 1968. He then moved to the University of Southern California, USA, where he completed an MSc and PhD in Computer Science. In 1979, Al-Suwaiyel returned to KFUPM as assistant professor and later as the dean of Computer Science and Engineering. In 1991, he took up the position of Vice President for Research Institutes at the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology, KACST, an independent scientific organization which is both the Saudi Arabian national science agency and its national laboratories. From 2003 to 2006 Al-Suwaiyel went on to serve as the Governor of the Communications and Information Technology Commission before returning to KACST as President in 2006. During his career Al-Suwaiyel has served on numerous national boards and committees in matters related to science and technology.
