Transurethral resection of the prostate is the current gold standard treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH); however, the risks and complications associated with this procedure correlate with prostate size, and consequently open surgery is often required to treat large prostates (>100 g). Humphreys and colleagues report the results of a retrospective review of medical records from 507 consecutive patients who underwent holmium laser enucleation of the prostate to treat BPH at a single center.
