The new pain curriculum: a guide for neurologists who teach

Advances in pain medicine and neurobiology are re-shaping the needs of medical trainees in these areas. Neurologists—by virtue of expertise in neuroanatomy, neuromodulating pharmacotherapy, and specific pain conditions—have a key role in pain care and pain education. These guidelines are provided to enhance teaching about pain as a neurally mediated condition.

The 'new pain curriculum' includes basic science, clinical science (evidence-based medicine), clinical skills, and diagnosis and management (a checklist of the recommended topics is available as supplementary online information). Recommended teaching approaches range from clinical reasoning exercises that build pain knowledge to explicitly compassionate role-modeling that strengthens the professionalism of advanced students.
