Cell biology encompasses one of the most visually striking areas of scientific research and generates a vast number of spectacular and beautiful images. In particular, the rapid development of multi-colour imaging technologies has helped not only to visualize cell biological processes in a way never before possible, but also granted us countless pictures of stunning beauty.

Most of these photographs, however, will never be published in a formal manuscript, and hence will not be shared with other researchers. To dedicate more space to some of these stunning images, Nature Cell Biology has teamed up Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology to provide a forum in which images can be published for the sole purpose of highlighting the beauty of cell biology.

Therefore, we are delighted to announce the launch of our 'Cell of the Month' image competition in January 2003. This competition is open for the submission of images from October 1st this year. Throughout 2003, the editors of both journals will select and publish one winning image per issue.

We invite all our readers to send us their favourite images using our online submission system (http://mts-ncb.nature.com/cgi-bin/main.plex), where, from October onwards, more detailed instructions for image formats can be found. In particular, we would like to encourage students and postdocs to participate in this competition and we look forward to receiving your competition entries. A new website address for Nature Cell Biology

The Nature Cell Biology home page can now be reached at our new address:http://www.nature.com/naturecellbiology. Our previous address (http://cellbio.nature.com) now redirects to the Nature Publishing Group's molecular cell biology community home page. More information about this community page can be found in the editorial from the July issue (Nature Cell Biology 4, E163 (2002)).
