ABSTRACT

On June 10-11,1993, the Washington D.C.-based Institute for Science in Society (ISIS), a nonprofit education organization dedicated to science and the public health, sponsored a conference to explore the issues surrounding the impact of biotechnology and its products on human health, agriculture, and the environment. The conference included speeches by Assistant Secretary of Agriculture Eugene Branslool, Senator Patrick Leahy fD-Vl.l, Mr. Gregory C. Simon, Domestic Policy Adviser to Vice President Albert Gore, and Dr. Dennis A very of the Hudson Institute: panel discussions on “Dealing with Change: New Paradigms,” “Trangenics,” “Role of the Media,” and “Values, Perceptions, and Public Confidence:” and breakout sessions on product labeling, biotechnology and the environment, biotechnology and public education, and setting the public agenda.
