Last year witnessed the biotech sector's first retreat from a multi-year run of incredible performance on the public markets.

After three years of immodest success the biotech industry's market value peaked in 2015. By the end of May, the major biotech market indices had fallen precipitously from their July 2015 highs, dropping nearly 50%. In recent months, capital has become much more difficult to raise—though not impossible—thanks in part to the specter of an increasingly cool pricing and reimbursement climate in biotech's core US and European markets. Because investors' outlook on biotech is infamously cyclical, this chill in sentiment was always just a matter of time.
