Response to Protocol Review Scenario: The veterinarian and welfare take priority

In the research arena, we have come to appreciate the spectrum of personalities encountered in our work places. Although, Morales's extreme control of the lab environment appears daunting, the Institutional Official (IO) and an Attending Veterinarian (AV) must establish the same rapport with the Principal Investigator (PI) that appears to exist between the laboratory and animal care staff.

In our opinion, the delay in reporting a number of adverse events is the most important issue. Morales doesn't want to leave anything to chance; her behavior clearly demonstrates a strong need to control for variables. However, her delay in reporting adverse events is actually counterproductive to this goal. The IO and AV should present examples were the delay in reporting can both exacerbate an animal welfare situation and leave a confounding variable unaddressed, thus negatively impacting the research. Hopefully, the two groups can use the discussion to lay a foundation for future proactive communications.
