Glucose infusion rates (GIR): shaken, not stirred

I enjoyed the special article by Chowning and Adamkin1 in the July issue of the Journal, and can see how staff and trainees might appreciate an easy to use visual aid to ‘calculate’ glucose infusion rates in the NICU (or anywhere else for that matter).

However, in the interest of keeping one’s brain stimulated (at a minimum GIR of 4 mg kg−1min−1) and avoiding one more card to hang from my ID badge, along with my medical school library ID and various ‘handy references’ the hospital provides to comply with Joint Commission and safety requirements, I would like to suggest that we continue to calculate GIR.
