Universal pulse oximetry screen for critical congenital heart disease in the NICU

As of August 2013 (1103 infants discharged home from the NICU over 18 months), 1024 critical congenital heart disease (CCHD) screens were performed in the NICU at Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo. A summary of our results is given below.

(i) One ‘symptomatic’ infant with a normal prenatal sonogram could not be weaned off oxygen prior to discharge and underwent an echocardiogram (Figure 1) and was diagnosed to have total anomalous pulmonary venous return). One asymptomatic infant with a positive screen had an arteriovenous malformation (non-CCHD detection rate—1/976 infants discharged home in room air=0.1%).
