Correction 12 April 2021: This article has been updated to explain more fully how Springer Nature’s licence requirements affect the ability of Plan S authors to share their manuscripts openly, if they publish behind a paywall. It originally stated that the licence ‘effectively overwrites’ the RRS (rights retention strategy); this claim is contested. The article also now notes that only some – not all – Plan S authors can share their manuscripts online with a liberal licence if publishing in Science.
