Late onset cytomegalovirus encephalitis after reduced-intensity conditioning allogeneic SCT: an emerging neurological complication?

We read with great interest the recent article by Reddy et al.1 reporting two cases of CMV encephalitis and reviewing literature, in which it was underlined that this is a problematic infectious complication, often considered to be rare in patients undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic SCT. Indeed, as reported in the article, only few cases have been reported in SCT recipients.1

We fully agree with the conclusions of the authors on the need to keep in mind the possibility of this neurological infectious complication in SCT patients who manifest clinical symptoms consistent with encephalitis.
