A new reconstruction of temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean during the last ice age, 21,000 years ago, is the latest act in providing climate modellers with details of the past to help predict the future.

Earth's ice ages reveal climate changes beyond the range of modern human experience, and provide insight into mechanisms of global change. Palaeoclimatologists have long sought an accurate map of sea surface temperatures at the height of the last ice age, 21,000 years ago, as this would provide a crucial test of the models used to simulate past, present and future climates. A collection of papers from the GLAMAP-2000 (Glacial Atlantic Ocean Mapping) project1, published in Paleoceanography, presents the most detailed attempt yet to reconstruct temperatures for the Atlantic.
